As you research your Maltese ancestry, you will collect names, dates, photographs, certificates, and family stories. A simple system will help you find information again, understand where it came from and decide what to do next.
You can begin with a notebook, folders and a spreadsheet. Choose a system you find easy to maintain.
Here are some clear steps to help you keep organized:
Give everything a home
Create one main folder called Maltese Family History. Inside it, make folders for family trees, research notes, certificates, interviews, etc.
If you are keeping paper documents, use labelled folders or sleeves
Use clear filenames
Give each digital file a clear name that tells you exactly what it contains. For example: Borg_Giuseppe_Marriage_1867_Mosta.jpg
Keep a research log
record what you searched and when, where you searched, what you discovered (even if unsuccesful)
Record where each fact came from (sources and evidence)
Separate evidence from possibilities
Make it clear on how certain you are about a finding. Useful labels include, supported by a record, reported by a relative, possible connection.
Keep track of names and places
Organize photographs and family stories
